CUPE 2626

CUPE 2626 represents thousands of Teaching and Research Assistants, Markers, Tutors, Lab Monitors, Demonstrators, Proctors, Lifeguards and Residence Life workers at the University of Ottawa. CUPE 2626 operates under the broader organization of CUPE National (the Canadian Union of Public Employees), Canada’s largest union with approximately 600 000 members across the country. As part of a dynamic and democratic union, all CUPE members operate on the basis of solidarity and equality: an injury to one member is an injury to all members.

Your Rights

For information on your rights as academic workers, please visit the union website and see the collective agreement. As academic workers, several sources of funding and benefits are available to you.

The funding available to academic workers includes:

  • Financial aid fund

  • Conference fund

  • Solidarity fund

  • Emergency fund

  • Health and dental fund

  • Grocery fund

  • Essentials fund

The Collective Agreement ensures that you are able to work without your studies being negatively impacted. For information on work limits and to obtain a tally sheet to track your work hours, please read the union’s page on avoiding overwork and the collective agreement (e.g., your supervisor cannot ask you to work more than 8 hours a day, 25 hours per week, and 40 hours for a period of two consecutive weeks).

If you are a full-time graduate student and have worked as a TA, RA, Proctor, Marker, Tutor or Lab Demonstrator in the past, you might also be entitled to job security.
